  14.  Not surprisingly, nobody will say on the record
  15. something nasty about Schwarzkopf.
  16.  
  17.  But there is an undertone in several background
  18. conversations of some doubts about Schwarzkopf.
  19.  
  20.  One former top U.S. military official said that he was
  21. slightly surprised at Schwarzkopf's rapid rise and
  22. renown. Observing him at JCS meetings he didn't find
  23. "anything special there." But he's quick to point out
  24. that Schwarzkopf at that point was a deputy (I think to
  25. Vuono) and deputies in that role don't often say a lot.

  27.  General (ret) Bernard Trainor, a Marine, says he's heard 
  28. some scuttlebutt about Schwarzkopf. "I get mixed signals
  29. on Norman," said one retired general officer. Former
  30. Marine Commandant P.X. Kelly liked him a lot; General
  31. Walt Boomer, who commands the Marines in Saudi Arabia,
  32. likes him a lot. Schwarzkopf gets good marks for wearing
  33. a "purple suit," i.e., he is not fixated on his service.

  35.  One other four-star general had also heard some rumbles, 
  36. some complaints about the good publicity Schwarzkopf has
  37. been getting. He didn't like Schwarzkopf's early press
  38. interview performances.

  40.  Everybody, however, agrees that Schwarzkopf's temper is
  41. a major shortcoming in his personality. "He really throws 
  42. a tantrum," said one official, "that includes yelling and 
  43. cursing and throwing things." Some subordinate officers
  44. have really been turned off by this. "In my view, this
  45. indicates a certain immaturity," said source.

  47.  Observers agree that Schwarzkopf may now be a candidate
  48. for chief of staff (although he's reaching retirement age 
  49. this year-- but that can be extended). But they also say
  50. had he not served as Centcom that never would have been
  51. possible. Professional military types note the point made 
  52. in earlier files--that Centcom was a backwater assignment 
  53. when he took it. But we also know that Norman Schwarzkopf 
  54. believed in that slot, anticipated that the big blowup
  55. would be in the Middle East, not with the Sovit Union.
